Verity Book Club Questions
Welcome to the Buddy Book Club – we have a light-hearted comedic podcast that covers a variety of books. Speaking of variety, Verity by Colleen Hoover is the book we’re covering today. This isn’t one we covered on the podcast (little side reading never hurt anyone), but was one that I burned through and could not put down. If you’re looking for an intense dark thriller, with great writing, look no further. I don’t give many books a 5-star on Good Reads, but this one earned it. It would likely land in the #4-6 range if I had to rank it compared to our current favorite books that we’ve read for our podcast. It’s also has similar pacing and aspects as The Silent Patient (which we’re reading right now) and Sharp Objects. So if you like thrillers, like murder mystery, give this a try.
Our book club questions try to be a little more outside the box/comedic than your typical book club questions – hopefully you enjoy them.
Book Club Questions – Verity by Colleen Hoover
-> Would you ever offer the ‘shirt off your back’ to a stranger like Jeremy did for Lowen?
For me I would be more worried about the shirt being sweaty or having a stain on it and them being like ‘nah I don’t want your gross shirt’. I don’t think I’d ever even consider it.
-> Have you ever experience near death while being on your phone?
After the opening scene, I thought this book was going to be about the perils of being on your phone too much. I’m just glad I don’t live in New York city as I can definitely imagine zoning out while listening to an audiobook and getting run over.
-> How about Lowen agreeing to take over a book series and meeting the author… but never actually reading any of her books. That’s a pretty insane move right?
I still get anxiety thinking about the times I didn’t do my homework in high school, Lowen is just confidently showing up not even pretending to have read any of the previous books. Seems like that’d be a pretty important homework assignement.
-> Maybe I read too many YA books, but anyone else think this was one of the more sexual books they’ve ever read? I was blushing through many parts of it.
I remember thinking The Song of Achilles was a bit graphic on that front, but that book wasn’t even close to this. Maybe I’m just a huge prude?
-> Staying on the graphic front, Verity and Jeremy have Steak n’ Shake before having sex for the first time… Anyone else’s stomach grumbling just thinking about this?
Maybe I’m just super insecure, but I know what Steak n’ Shake does to ones stomach, and having to perform for the first time with that brewing in your stomach is really impressive… but Jeremy is perfect afterall.
-> Staying on brand with the above, anyone else think Jeremy was a little too perfect? Tall, muscular, attractive guy, who also happens to be a caring and supportive spouse, a great dad, and phenomenal lover (with an iron stomach).
What guy can live up to Jeremy? I was convinced he had much darker secrets just based on the fact that no one can be that perfect.
-> Does calling a kid an asshole at the beginning of the book make Lowen’s character more hateable or likeable?
Personally, it made me like her more. Some times kids are assholes and need to be called such. I respected her honesty.
-> What was your favorite scene from the book?
This book doesn’t have your typical ‘scenes’ you can point to, it just all seems to flow naturally. But Lowen whispering into Verity’s ear about what she’s going to do with her husband really stood out to me. You don’t know if Lowen is psychotics, trying to be Verity, or if she’s justified. I felt like I had no idea what was going to happen.
-> Biggest red herring of the book is the fact that Lowen doesn’t like pizza… Who doesn’t like pizza?!
I thought for sure she would end up being the evil character after finding that out.
-> How good are Jeremy’s swimmers? He pretty much instantly impregnated both Verity and Lowen when he tried.
Unfortunately those genes didn’t pass down, as his children weren’t great swimmers… Too dark?
-> Who would you cast in the movie of Verity?
Check out our Make it a Movie blog if you need some inspiration.
-> What did you think of the ending and the letter that Lowen discovers? Do you believe Verity?
I don’t. I think she just wrote a convincing letter that was full of lies. She is a great writer after all. Also, if her autobiography was for ‘training’ purposes, wouldn’t that be listed somewhere? And wouldn’t she have to go back and edit things to make them make sense? Only a person capable of faking a brain injury for months and having people take care of you night and day, would also be capable of doing all the things she wrote in her autobiography. I don’t believe her for a second.
