And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie – Episode 15
The buddies dive into the mystery genre starting off with the ‘Queen of Mystery’ herself, Agatha Christie in her 1938 novel, “And Then There Were None”. The buddies reminisce about the good ol’ days when being a doctor was a lot easier, how spam mail could have saved lives, and why tongue is best served cold.

Welcome, buddy book club. Thanks for joining us. I’m here once again, with my good buddy Keith, to break down some best sellers. This time around, we’re going for an all time bestseller, specifically, the best selling mystery novel of all time, which I didn’t know until I looked this up afterwards. That book is Agatha Christie’s. And Then There Were None. If you’d like to reach out to us regarding this book, or any of our past or future episodes, you can visit our website buddy book club.com are signed to our DMS on Twitter or Instagram buddy book club podcast, you can listen to us on iTunes and Spotify. So please download and subscribe. And I really mean that even though I just kind of read that, like it was, you know, don’t drink responsibly, kind of thing. I really do. Keith, good to hear you again. But yeah, great to hear from you. So I think we should just kind of dive into this book, considering it was short. So I feel like we should also, you know, do it justice in this and not like doddle on the on the insignificant portions. But so this is Agatha Christie book. I think it was written in like 1938 originally in London, England,
were they in World War Two at that point, they are about to start getting bombed and she’s like alright, let’s let’s bang this.
Well, battle for Britain was writing 40
I knew I could trust you for history data that’s or data as we would say,
Britain. So yeah, it’s think it’s September 38 was when Poland was invaded. Right. So yeah, this was pretty much there. But that’s like I saw I watched Casa Blanca recently. And that movie was made in 1942. Like that was a movie about World War Two as World War Two was raging. Oh, really? Yeah. Actually, a lot of it. They use French expats, which is pretty much what the movie is about. So it’s like real French expats in this movie about French expats so they can do things like that, I guess. She’s like, hey, publishing places, publishing houses are still going on, even though the bombs are exploding around them. So we appreciate that, you know, the arts will fight through any war. We appreciate that. Thank you, Agatha Christie, although maybe not for your original title.
I always had x Pac Man, ex patriot like X. American, is that not right?
So it’s not all patriots are Americans. But I I might be using that term wrong. I don’t know.
Yeah, it’s from anywhere. You’re right. Hey, today, I learned this. Why don’t we do this
today I learned but it was released in the US in 1940. Agatha Christie to me, and yes, I’m a dullard. I really thought she was the woman for murder. She wrote Who’s that woman? She does Mrs. Potts in in Beauty and the Beast. But they were the same person. I can’t remember her name. But yeah, I read that they’re the same person. I don’t know. Maybe because it was like murder. She wrote Agatha Christie, like murder stuff, mystery stuff. But I learned, you know, I live they’re actually not the same person. And she wrote lots of I mean, she’s I think she’s the most prolific author like 250 books or something crazy like that. But this, she said, and this I mean, and then there were none, she said was her most difficult book to write. And I guess the people liked it because it became the best selling book. I think it’s like the most widespread book behind the Bible, which is pretty crazy to me.
Yeah, she’s sold more than 2 billion copies. Not this book. 100 million of this book, but 200 million copies in total and her books like naturally, it’s the she is the 100 billion, no, 2 billion.
Oh, what are you Dr. Evil? 2 billion. Yeah, absurd.
Queen of mystery. She’s, she’s a gamer.
I guess in a lot of other her novels, she has like recurring characters, like almost like a Sherlock Holmes type, you know, the same kind of people, detectives, or main characters or whatnot. This is not one of those. So I think it was probably a good entry point for us. And a lot of people loved it. And this is the end, unfortunately, of our summer beach read series. And I think this book fit perfectly because it’s short. It’s like fast paced. And there’s an actual ending to it. Unlike the last book we read, which was you know, really nice.
Well over that.
Never gonna be over it. That was the worst experience of my life. Reese Witherspoon I’m coming for you. Why don’t you put this reason why don’t you just throw this out there. You know. Oh, cuz no one’s paying you for it. I get it now. Yeah,
she’s not in the garage yet.
But so this book and then there were none focuses on eight individuals who had to deserted island at the request of UN Oh, and, and they think they’re getting invited to this fun kind of vacation retreat for a weekend. And then along with the two caretakers, the groundskeeper and his wife, they all die. And one of them is the killer and Somehow, she keeps us going the whole time without any of us know. And I had no idea did you have at any point feel? I mean, obviously, throughout the book you you have some times you’re like, I think it could be this person. But was it a situation where you’re like, Oh, I know. It’s like when we read dark matter, it was like, Okay, there’s an alternate universe. Like right away. Yeah, that same page.
No, I mean, I think because I knew her reputation. I knew it was. There’s gonna be someone there’s gonna be murder, but like, halfway through. I was like, Wait, is this kind of like a Stephen King novel? Where like, the house is just killing people. Yeah. No, that’s not gonna be happening. My guest like after the second person who killed my guess was Philip Lombard the whole time? Yeah, just thought he was he seemed like the person just because like they didn’t really get in his head ever. And he was the least regret full person and they murdered away the person. The one person that was like, least regretful, they murdered right away. And then they did murder him. So I thought I was like, Oh, he must be here. He must be you know the guy, but I was wrong. Okay, well,
let’s not dive too deep into it. Because we have some time. Let’s do I’m going to jump into a little libation. Normally, we like to have a you know, libation to get us through the podcast in an enjoyable way. And Keith usually has coffee, but that’s
because you know, I have a coffee and a bush light.
Wow, really. Nothing classier than a coffee in a bush light. Hopefully
your nice coffee in a bush light.
But because this movie was written in the 30s. And there obviously are some references to booze near you know, they’re drinking brandy and stuff like that. But yeah, Brandy is disgusting. I don’t know if you’ve ever had it’s grass. So I’m going to go for just like a 1930s cocktail. And I’m having a bee’s knees, which is also apropos to have one of our characters dies, or at least the poem itself. But it’s a gin with lemon juice and honey. And I’ll tell you quite nice. And I’m not a big gin guy, but it’s quite nice. Without further ado, let’s get into our favorite scene. I mean, this book is really good at keeping the pace, which I enjoyed thoroughly, I read it, you listen to it, I assume? Yep. But as I’m reading it, I mean, it wasn’t necessarily one of those like page turners, like a Da Vinci Code or something like that. But it just kept going forward, there was no kind of like deep backstories where they were like, What is this for? Like all the quick backstories just kind of explained why those people were here. I don’t know if you had a favorite scene. But I’d like to know if you did.
My favorite scene was the announcing part where they play the record. And basically all the people are announced. And I’m not sure if this has been done before. But this is like stolen from every single horror movie. Every movie now like that has any sort of like murdering an order does some sort of thing like this, like a saw type movie or like a final destination where like, you know, the order that things are going down and like or you know that there’s this list of people that need to be killed for a certain reason? It seems like this was like probably maybe the origins for a lot of that I could be wrong. But that’s just the sense I got this has been stolen so many times over now at this point, for sure.
It’s like those, even those other books, when it’s like the reading of the will or whatever the case is, you know, it’s all the people in the room. Yeah, stuff is kind of divulged via you know, whether it be a recording, or will it was kind of like the beginning of Act Two almost in, in this book where it was like, okay, like this, let’s get real. Like, now we know why these people are here. Because up to that point, we were just kind of like, okay, something’s going down. And we obviously knew that this is like a murder mystery book. But no one had died yet. And then it was like, and immediately after that someone dies.
Yeah, that was definitely my favorite. The other thing was just overall Judd Wargrave great name by the way. Just taking control the group it gave me the like the the 12 Angry Men feel. I don’t know that’s a throwback book. But is that a book or play?
Well, it’s a play. So I think you can read it. But it’s also a James Gandolfini in the movie that I watched in high school. Definitely. Oh, really? Yeah.
I only watched the black and white movie. So I’d assume that he wasn’t in there.
Yeah, I didn’t like Jack Lemmon. And him. He plays like the angry guy who wants to
go he was one of the 12. But yeah, just like the backend for it’s another judge kind of like directing people being like, No, you’re an idiot. Because of this. And this, you basically kind of learn all the characters through these, like quick conversations that are kind of going back and forth. And you understood each person’s perspective and certainly the judges like kind of the narrator, but somehow Yeah,
yeah, I think that’s so well puppies is exactly how I felt because it was a little confusing, when there were so many characters and they all have three names, because, you know, that’s just what people do. Lawrence, John Wargrave and General John Gordon MacArthur, you know, it’s they just have so many names and then there’s all the backstory and I wait, is this the Is this the army guy or is this and who did he kill in his previous thing? So the judge kind of acts as that intermediary to like, help clear your mind and like guide you through it. Would you also know at the same time, like, it’s written this way, so that like to put you on some sort of like false trails or something, but it’s helpful. Anyway, it’s helpful to like, get through the story itself.
Yeah. What about your favorite scene?
I think once the storm comes in, and they realize like, Oh, we’re stuck here, oh, people are actually dying once they realize it’s one of them. And they’re all kind of like sitting together in the cigar room, the library room, like after dinner, then they’re all just like waiting there being like, okay, like, you’re going to the bathroom. Okay, like one person at a time. When it starts getting to that point, I felt like, that was when I actually started to get like, pretty excited about it. Because like, okay, there’s only like, six people here. Like, I can figure this out, you know, and see that scene, when it’s like, this guy’s going away, like I draw, like, as I’m reading my mind stern movie, like, Oh, could it be him? Could it be them? Like, what’s the case? So I feel like, even though it’s kind of cheating on like, an exact scene, it was just like that part of the book was when I was really like, Oh, I’m, I’m into this.
I can dig it. Yeah, for sure.
Or, I mean, my real number one scene is when the like, bare marble clock falls in that guy’s head, because I just saw that happening in my brain, like, over and over again.
Yeah, that’s where I was like, the house is, is taking things over right now. Right? Like the House is doing these things. It didn’t make any sense to me. I was trying to figure out how that could possibly happen. But yeah, well, I
also picture this as almost a movie where all the other murders especially at the beginning are poison or, you know, stabbing someone in the neck with the hypodermic needles, so it’s not that exciting. And then all the sudden you just see this like long shot clip of this guy looking up, and then just like head caved in from this clock, and it’s just like, Okay, this isn’t some like Silent Killer. This is some dark shit going down.
Yeah, yeah. I think this could be for sure be like an actual legit horror film. Like they just made the deaths a little more gruesome. And
yeah, you don’t even need to make the deaths any more gruesome just in the film. Do like the Alka Seltzer tablet in the mouth kind of thing when they’re dying from yeah, there’s like a gruesome, like Joffrey and Game of Thrones when he dies of poisoning, like, Oh my God, that’s fucked.
Well, the People’s reaction in the book when people die, like, that’s too bad. Yeah. Anyway.
It’s so true when they die for as the source of the poisoning one or like, my wife didn’t wake up in the middle of the night. It’s like, Oh, that stinks. Like, should we put a sheet on her? He’s like, Yeah, okay, I’ll make breakfast.
Your wife just died. Let’s can just stock up, stock down. Stock up. What are you buying?
Old Doctor practices stock up? I’m pretty sure I could be a doctor back in the day. I mean, here’s the four steps of being a doctor first. You tell the patient, it’s all mental. I mean, that’s first like what I already do know it is all it’s all true. Well, that’s fact already. So we already have that proven out. Second, if that’s not working, you get in some brandy or some sort of hard alcohol. I mean, that’s got to clear their head. They’re healed by them. If they’re still being uppity, that’s where you slap him in the face. And you’re like, listen, Mitch, alright.
I don’t think you can say bitch in this well, this
is in bitch in this situations, man or female. I didn’t mean in a derogatory way for female. And then fourth, if those aren’t working, we go leeches or lobotomy bag. Those are the top four things and that’s it. That’s all I got in my in my toolbox. Maybe an apple a day. But other than that,
yeah. The crazy thing is you fast forward like 50 years and it’s like no, no, we have so much advances in medicine. electroshock therapy.
I made it also we still give things that are probably way way way worse than brandy now, so people were like, Brandy. That’s crazy. It’s like oh, yeah, just take these like OPI. It’s like wait, what? Like
yeah, 100% Yeah, it’s a good read that have you addicted to alcohol and addicted to opiates. So I did like that one. That’s a good one. Old old timey. Dr. Bryce also the NIC on Showtime or it’s also on HBO max right now. Really good show.
So love Soderbergh. Or Clevo. And yeah, Kai vo on Yeah, who
doesn’t love Clive Ellen? I mean, shoot him off. Is that that movies in? It’s so bad, but it’s so good.
I haven’t seen that. Oh, you should see it.
You know how everyone jokes around. Like when you’re shooting a gun in a movie. There’s just never, you never just have a clip change. It’s just like, there’s 28 bullets in this pistol. How’s that possible? This movie takes that to the next level. My stock up nose to tail eating. I mean, it’s still pretty hip. Right now. You know the idea. You got Joe beef in Montreal. Lots of places that
we can define that what?
So it’s the idea of like eating every part of the animal. You know, so as opposed to you have pork belly and bacon and you have pork shoulder and you have backstrap or loin, whatever the case is, but a lot of stuff goes on eaten. In this book They’re like, eating cow’s tongue all the time or like pork tongue all the time. So what they’re eating a canned, which is even more disgusting. But yeah, you know, every time I go to Anna’s taqueria plug, great place. They have they have language on the menu, which is tongue and I’m like, Nah, I think I’ll get the chicken. And I think I’ve been missing out because these cultured folk love their canned tongue. So I appreciate that they’re advancing the nose to tail eating seen. So thank you, Agatha Christie. I appreciate that.
Yeah, I had this on my hates. But I basically said if I got to an island that was supposed to be like this, like rich, fancy Island, and they’re like, Hey, do you want for lunch? Cold tongue or ham? I’m diving off. I’m swimming back. What are we doing here? Cold tongue.
Well, the crazy part is that everyone’s like you. I’ll take the tongue it was like that Simpsons episode. You guys like Joe Mountain Dew or crab juice as it grows. I’ll take the crab juice. Same thing. I was like, Oh, no crows ham. I’ll take the tongue. So I guess we’re missing out. We should try more time. What else? What else you ever snuck up?
Bam, slash junk mail slash cat phishing scams. Oh, yeah. I feel like if you get a shady invite to some shady place. That doesn’t that seems too good to be true. That usually means it’s too too good to be true, right? Like if I got some invite being like you’re invited to by Dell into some really good mansion that just show up. Don’t worry about it. I’m deleting that. I’m like Dylan You got your fucking emails hacked.
It’s a when you get the text. You just want a free cruise around the world. It’s like no idea.
Yeah, what are we doing here? These people needed some spam or junk mail in their life. Realize this is obviously a scam they’re going to get and get killed. I mean, that’s that’s the first thought I would have if I got this email. So stock up for those things. They’re a penny stock right now, but we’re buying them hot and we’re just gonna, you know, we’re gonna get up to that two pennies get 100% Return easy day.
So you’re supporting the prince of Nigeria?
Yeah, exactly. Well, it’s
funny in classic stock up sock down fashion. I had first stock down trusting strangers, because yeah, it made no sense. All these people are I’ve never met this person. At least the old woman was like, Oh, I think I knew. I think I knew this person. I’m pretty sure I met them at a dinner party. But everyone else was pretty much. Nope, never met him. I don’t have any idea who this is. But this island seems pretty interesting. I’m down. It’s like well,
to be fair, if you’re kind of bored, I can see like, alright, well
yeah, that’s fair. No TV got no internet. Yeah. No NFL starting tonight. You know, there’s none of this stuff. So otherwise, it’s Yeah, dusty coach. So you might as well God, some island get some fresh sea air. change of scenery. Yeah. And it’s free.
Alright. Maybe I’m changing my man.
Maybe we should respond to more of those tags.
If you weren’t getting any emails, if you weren’t getting any emails or any text or anything. And you got one of those texts? Like I’m yeah, I’m gonna follow up. So we’ll see where it goes. 100% Maybe the prints? Yeah.
So other stock on my head was actually reading the book itself. So I’m sorry to shoot to shoot on your right here with listening to the audio book or, or like an e book, but tangible books, you know, something you can touch. And mostly for this book, was to the book opened with the poem, you know, 10 little soldiers, and which you can tell exactly like, after the first murder is like, oh, okay, interesting. Now, what’s the second line of the poem? So I could try to think about, oh, when I was gonna happen, which wasn’t very successful, but it made it interesting. I think that was actually almost better. You know, for her writing it because she kind of hid those. It wasn’t so obvious, especially the bear one, it’s like, oh, this, how is there going to be a bear on the island. And then the guy, you know, gets hit the face with the bear clog. So good. It’s the same as when we read fifth season, or even Artemis, there’s like a map on the first page, you know, so it’s like one of those things where you can go back and like look at it. And you know, even when I read Lord of the Rings, like having the Middle Earth map at the front of the book is like, okay, I can follow photos journeys, awesome. Yeah. I love that stuff, though. Like I used to. When I watch Game of Thrones, I’d pull up like the map of Westeros and be like, oh, cool, cool. There’s different areas going on, but I’m just probably a psychopath.
I completely agree. Also, too, for me it was I kind of wanted to turn back the pages a little bit to see which character is which because it was a little bit tough to keep all 10 people in your mind it especially with the longer names or what I’ve read other ones, it’s just in the narrative voice of that one person is much easier because there’s a audio book voice for that person. So it’s just like, oh, that’s this person. You know, like you just right away. No, you connect the voice with that person or this it’s like jumping all around. And it was one the good
thing is when she wrote it, that first chapter or first two chapters is like quick intros of everyone so that when I’d be reading it, you know, Marston said this I’d be like, wait, is he the guy that hit those people this car and I just go back to the first chapter? That’s exactly one one quick paragraph of John Marston is this guy. So yeah tangible books hey man fill out a bookshelf bookshelves are cool. bookshelves are cool. They’re gonna stock down what do you got?
Doc down judges gut feeling a lot going on there. So a lot, lot lot of going on this, you know, a judge should basically be very, very factual and based off of the evidence presented. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, in the way Hargrave was talking he or WarGames right was talking was like he was doing that. He was like, No, we can’t rule out this person. You can’t rely even me because all these factories we need true evidence. But he’s going off of like hearsay. He’s going off of like, I think this person killed him. He’s like, That’s good enough for me. But I’m at the island. Let’s fuck this person over. It’s like, wait, what? That’s because he’s in the book. He’s talking about how, like we can’t trust something that’s hearsay. But all these stories are here. Yeah. So that doesn’t make
as I said in the epilogue is I met this woman and she said that she knew of another person whose cousin killed this person. So I invited them to my island.
Yeah. In some of these people were accurate morsel which made it even made it even worse, right?
Oh, for sure. It seems like I’m sure we’ll get into that in a pick your character slash best dead. Stock down. The stock down for me is getting away with murder. So all these people did get away with murder, or at least for the most part, we’ll get into that. But you know, they thought they were scot free. And it turns out, you’re going to die away worse death. Like, you’re never free from the murder you do. So my suggestion, don’t kill anyone. And you’re fine.
That’s a pro tip. I didn’t think of that. And now that you say that,
you don’t kill anyone. You’re chill. Actually, I read that in a movie production or state I think a stage production when that is stage production of this. They Agatha Christie changed the ending because she didn’t want this like morbid ending where everyone died. And then there’s also like, no way of kind of clearing up the whole thing, which I kind of disagree with. You could have, you could have Wargrave survive, and just like kind of go out to sea and like write his memoir and put it in a bottle. I thought that’d be fine with the play. But instead she made Vera and who is the guy that she was flirty, flirty with? Thought it was Lombard? Or was it Blore? Whatever. Oh, yeah, it was right. Yeah. So her and Lombard, like, it turns out that they were actually innocent. And they somehow like got off the island in the play. So Oh, really? Yeah, I guess they didn’t murder anyone in the play. They had to change it. But stock down, getting away with murder. It’s it’s not gonna happen for you, if something just don’t murder.
My other sock down voodoo dolls stocked down. So those little soldier figurines on the table. Each time someone dies, it gets removed from the table like, are we all not assuming these are actual voodoo dolls and kind of paying attention to them a little bit more like I’m just the only one of voodoo dolls invented back then, like what are we doing here? So first thing I thought I was like, Oh, these are all voodoo dolls. Right? I’m also
surprised that no one just decided, like, pick all these up and throw them in the fire. In a situation like that. No, but then everyone would die though. That’s but in a situation like that, where you have no control. And you know that, like one of these is getting removed every time someone dies. It’s like, hey, screw you killer. Like, you’re not going to do that anymore. Like I’m getting control of the situation somehow. So it’s no surprise, I agree with that. But yeah, I’m with you. And you know, actually, I’m kind of stuck up on adults in general. Like, I like the idea. And I wish there was more of them. So
well, like you just said throw them in the fire that would literally just burn all Them the ones
that let’s put that to Yeah, test. There was each
of them represent one person or they just all the same. They all look the same. It’d be cool if like one was actually like a person
like, Yeah, from what I’ve seen, and I watched a 1989 movie today, or I started it and it was horrible. starring Frank Stallone, Rob brother. It was Frank Stallone and Blofeld. Who’s the way is it actually? Yeah, actually, it’s Frank’s son. No and free songs an actor and he’s also a great singer.
Holy shit. You’re right. I thought I was joking. I thought it was similar as a British actor,
and so is him. And one of the the Justice Wargrave was Blofeld from the James Bond movies. Who is the inspiration for Dr. Evil Austin Powers reference. Gotcha. So I don’t know where I was going with that. But I just watched that and they were all the same character. Granted, it was like kind of a racist movie. So I stopped watching it for you, which speaking of stock down the original title, I don’t want to talk about it. For sure not. Yeah, I don’t even want to talk about it. I don’t want to talk about the change of the title. But like, yikes, people, like Get your shit together for Christ’s sake. Like, how did people think that was fine to do?
I just don’t understand that just blows my mind. Is it was it did it mean something different?
I hope it didn’t. And, okay, and then like, even then on, like, 20 years later, they had a movie or a play. That’s of the same name. Like at no point was someone like this is completely inappropriate. Like, what the fuck just shows how backwards we are as a people. But yeah, that was a it was unfortunate. And I’m glad they changed it to this soldiers thing, but also just a quick takedown and talking about how things have changed, or at least maybe not have changed. But how you said earlier about the the not accusing these women of being would they insane or manic or whatever the case was, it was like, Oh, she’s got a bout of the insanity. Yeah, it wasn’t Syria, what do they say?
But this is also written by a woman. So it doesn’t say you got to give a lecture again of the sexes. I’m
not going I’m not going there again, if you want to listen. But it was just like, oh, you know, basically like, oh, this woman’s just cracked. Like now the guys even though all the guys are cracking to just like know, this woman’s cracked, which we do hit her in the face. It’s like what the fuck is going on here? Like
I said, I’m for that for men and women. I am an equal opportunity slapper. Okay, I’ve said that multiple times on this podcast. I will slap I do
love how it’s like they slap there. And immediately she’s like, Oh, I’m sorry. I just lost myself for a moment. Of course. Of course, did if you’re gonna do something like that. Do the Gatorade dunk. You know, pour the pour the thing Gatorade on their back or something like that. You know?
Have you seen John Henderson? Shoes? Get out? I have no idea. My favorite YouTube video. Yeah. John Henderson gets slapped. You want me to pause the pod for you to watch this right now? This is gonna get you amped up for football tonight.
Oh, wait, is that what he said? When I hit a man or woman? That one?
No, it’s It’s a trainer. His name’s Joe is what I call everyone, Joe. But
oh, you have showed me that before people go out. He slaps him in the face.
And he’s like, yeah, I get butterflies. And sometimes I need to get hit. And he’s like, Come on, Joe. Let’s go baby and just show us fucking hits the shit out of them. And he’s like, whoa, that’s
another video. I don’t know who it is. I want to say it’s like me and Joe Green, but it’s not. But he’s one of those defensive linemen. Someone asked him in an interview like hey, how do you do your move? Because he was big with this kind of like swim move almost thing but he hits them in the helmet. And he’s basically like, well, when you hit a man upside the head or woman It was like Wait I’ll send you that afterwards. But it’s so funny because it’s just like he quickly says like, we hit a man upside because it was like if you had said it the other way like if you to a woman oh no or man. Like I get that. But he
went he’s being Yeah, he went to see
on beating a man upside the head. Oh, sorry. Or woman if you beat that. picket character. I feel like this is more of like a best death. I obviously went with mine already. But do you have a character or best death that you’d like to support here?
So first off my favorite character. I already kind of hinted at it. But it was George Morgan. I wrote that before I found out he was the actual person killer. It just solidified it. Yeah, but he that just solidified things. Let’s do it’s going off. Like taking justice into his own hands. It’s very similar to what’s that movie there? I’m gonna bring the whole corrupt system down. I just I loved it. I club, you know, like, no, no. Law Abiding says, Oh,
I haven’t seen it. Really? Wow. Is it worth it? I’m like, I’m a bay like references that I haven’t seen yet. So cool. I’ll definitely check it out. Yeah,
I’m a I’m a very big fan of it. I also like the anti hero, so that’s why I like those type of movies. So spoilers. He’s an anti hero, which we love. I don’t know where I was going with that. Now. I’ve lost my train of
thought you just as Wargrave how much you liked him? Oh,
yeah, I already talked about it. But basically him kind of dictating the everyone everyone’s doing and like kind of setting the scene for everyone and then also end up being the murderer. I made it even better. I like
that’s fair. Yeah. So I like to hire blurs death, you know, this is gonna get crushed by ahead with the marble bear clock. We’ve already been over this. Yeah, yep, of course, he gave false evidence in court and the innocent man died. So I get that. Totally understandable. But there’s a lot of people who didn’t deserve it. Or at least there’s some that didn’t deserve it. Like the extremely pious Emily Clark Clark bent. Yeah, she did nothing wrong. She was a God fearing woman, and she fired her maid who had a baby out of wedlock, it’s like, obviously, I wouldn’t do that. But I understand if that’s where your situation is. And the maid ended up killing herself. Drowning yourself. Like, that’s not her fault. So why was she there? I didn’t understand she’s and she was stuck with their convictions all the time. She’s like, Yeah, you know, Jesus is coming for us, like whatever the case is.
Yeah, that’s like fifth degree murder. Yeah. So I
never I didn’t really understand that. Like, I think the judge had kind of got like his eight guys or eight people, or seven people, whatever the cases and had the island coming. I was like, shoot, I need one more. That was like, I’ve been like thinking about this other woman, like, just add her in, you know, just let’s just add her and yeah, also, there were some people let’s not lose, you know, let’s miss the forest for the trees kind of thing or trees in the forest, whatever the case is. But some people really did deserve it. Vera. She let that kid drown.
No, no, I’m on the office. This year that gets sucked. I mean, that’s not her fault. She didn’t she didn’t like drown him. She said don’t swim out there. And then he went and swam out there and then he drowned. Like, hey, get better. She’s like,
Oh, don’t go out there did it to do and like walked away.
Listen, listen. Matthew McConaughey got thrown thrown into a moving river at eight years old.
Check out our episode on green lights.
Yeah, this kid’s got a buck up and learn how to
Okay, fine. Fair, fair. I’ll give you that one. I thought What about Lombard? He caused the death of a slew of East African tribesmen by just like taking all their food and leaving them in the jungle. I thought
he was gonna have some sort of redemption or some sort of, that’s why I thought he was the
aliens. He did not seem to care. Like oh yeah, there’s some East African tribesmen and like, I just let them die. So right Jesus Christ did the imperialistic Society of like the 1800s or obviously before that, too, but that just like trickled into the 1900s is so fucked up. Like rubber plantations and stuff crazy. But Marston killed those kids. And like didn’t care. Obviously. He deserved to die first. He should have died to more gruesome death. Like you say, oh, hit those kids like cars like Yeah, it sucks. They took my car always like you murdered those children.
Yeah, he was too. too cocky of the walkie that’s the phrase.
Well, it’s getting some love hate. Would you love about it?
Yeah. So right back into what you’re talking about Philip Lombard, but Well, first off, I just loved all the British names, just great names. They’re very, very British. All the names are classic. But I assumed while listening to it the whole time that the whole lumbar support came from Philip Lombard because he was sleeping easy under murdering 20 people nuts here. I’m like, oh, lumbar. Yeah, this must be covered. Because if you murdered 20 people and you sleep easy at night. That’s some good lumbar support. I’ll see you my way.
I can’t tell you trying to make the worst job it’s ever made. Or you’re dead serious.
I was I wrote that down. Right when I heard his name like Lombard, like the support, did you Google it? And then he’s like, I killed it. I killed 20 Plus East Africans. And I was like, Oh my God. And he’s like, and I sleep well at night. I’m like, Oh, okay. Did you and I googled the word is not very similar. It’s, it’s fine. It’s fine. It’s fine. They were saying in a British accent like lumbar. So it’s Oh, right.
You’re really listening. Right? So I hope from here on out. You just refer to it as lumbar support
his lumbar support. I wasn’t convinced that was it until I liked it that he loved that. I also liked that kept me guessing all the time. I love just like not knowing what’s happening. Like I said, I thought it was Lebar the whole time. And then I was like, Oh, he just died. This because it’s not. I also really liked how they just absolutely shit on Rogers. Hilarious. Roger’s wife wife dies. The next morning. They’re like, hey, Roz. Get these eggs out here. And then he’s like, at some point. I was like, being like raising his voice. I’m like, Hey, Rogers get your head your shoulders fucking relax. It’s like his wife just died.
There’s no sympathy. All these deaths are just kind of like oh, well covered with a sheet and let’s move on.
Yeah. At one point though, and I think Rogers might be I don’t maybe he’s not in the house or not with the group at this point. But they’re like going through and the judges like Can anyone roll out anyone for like this murder and then one guy just raise hands like, definitely not Rogers. He has the brains to do like died and all this stuff. They’re like, yeah, it’s not him. This guy’s not smart enough. Like oh my god is Rogers.
Yeah, he’s like squeak he’s like squeaking basketball. Like if you guys brag on me 13 or 14 more times I swear to God, I’m out of
here. Man and then these basically 40 Cold tongues. Yeah,
he liked they liked it. They wanted over the hump. Some things I love that stuff that you were talking about, because it’s kind of two of mine is the pace of the book which We kind of already talked about it was just like always moving forward, which I really appreciated any kind of look back was just like a quick explanation of the character. And then it was like moving forward. So I really appreciate that. And the believability of the deaths, like how can you have and I think this is one of the hardest things for her to write was how can I have nine people die or 10 people die? And no one kind of start to freak the fuck out. And so I think the believability that’s like, Oh, this one died of poisoning and like this one died of, you know, sleeping overnight, like, oh, they died. So then they don’t really realize as a murderer until like, three deaths in and they don’t realize is one of them until like five deaths in and then at that point, it’s such a tight group. It’s like, oh, this is tense as fuck. So, yeah, I really like that. But when they did the UN o n, and then justice Wargrave was like U N, O and unknown. I was like, oh, especially reading it when you can see it there. I was like, Oh, that’s really sharp. And that’s the moment I knew that I wasn’t gonna figure out who the murderer was. I’m like, Oh, I’m not smart enough to figure out you know, and it’s like, it’s like, the guy’s name was like, you know, Ulysses, no. Oh, and his wife’s name was like, Ursula, you know, I don’t Natalie. Oh, and it sounds like, huh, I was like, Oh, wait, unknown Fuck, I’m so stupid. I just felt so dumb. And I was like, Well, I’m not gonna figure this out. So let’s just enjoy it. But I like that.
Have you ever done a escape the room? Yes, I did. I went in thinking I’m like, I’m really good at this. Like, I’m pretty good at like, you know, reasoning induction. I like couldn’t understand what’s going on the whole time. I was like, basically just reduce my confidence and like the worst way, I was like, Oh, Jesus, I’m not very smart. And that’s probably when you read these books. I don’t mind feeling smart. You’re not in a group. And people are like, wow, this guy’s an idiot. But yeah,
let’s say you felt humbled, if you will.
Yeah, I really well, yeah, I want to accept this award.
Well, yeah, I mean, the truth of the escape room. I was like, pretty excited for it. And it was like golf to me, where I’m like, pretty good at other sports, and I play golf, and I’m absolutely horrible. So I just have no interest and escape room. I was like, Oh, I’m gonna be awesome at this cuz I’m great at brain teasers and stuff like that. And I sat down, I couldn’t figure out the first thing and I was like, I quit. I literally just sat there was like, I’m not opening these drawers and like looking for codes like I’m, I’m over it. I’m fucked. Yeah. Right.
It’s like when someone gets like boardwalk and monopoly and you’re just like, oh my god, I hate the game. Like, you know, you get it. It’s like, I’m the best real estate mogul ever. You know,
normally Boardwalk is not the most prized property. It’s the orange properties and then the light blue properties. That’s like, Alright, pretty
basic. Yeah, yeah. Well, I mean, honestly, if you get if you get an early monopoly on Boardwalk, you can
fucking as long as you get the three house multiplier. If you only have one or two houses, you’re not going to bankrupt anybody. But if you get the three house multiplier,
we’ll do a live monopoly broadcast.
Oh, yeah. If you got to play Monopoly, I like it. Love monopoly. Alright, so yeah, I love that stuff. That’s pretty much it for me. But the UNO and stuff especially when you read it, it was almost like Tom Riddle to Voldemort. You know, I am Lord Voldemort kind of thing. But not as, you know, elaborate. It was very just sitting there you know, and okay, would you
already whatever the the food options like I said, I’m if everyone’s getting killed off the island, I’m taking a swim. I’m like, whatever, you know, I’m out of here.
I’ll just rescue no risk and no biscuit.
That’s what I’d be doing. You mentioned the guy that drove fast. I thought that was kind of wouldn’t fit in today’s thing. It’s like he was driving too fast. What a bad guy. It’s like, yeah, I guess he was on our Morrisville, which made him a bad guy. But other than that, it’s like I
feel that would fit more than ever. It’s like some dick driving around in like a Children at Play sign you know, the little frog sign like children play and he’s like, Fuck it, you know, and just hits a kid in the school zone. Just like bounces off the hood and keeps driving.
Alright, I guess that changes my mind. I think he’s going to prison though.
Oh, for sure. Well, actually, the this is like pretty early in motor vehicles. And they’re like wasn’t speed limits and stuff like that? If you look back at that time, it was insane. The amount of car accident deaths like there wasn’t any road signs there wasn’t anything Yes, people used to just yeah, just hate each other all the time in these like steel vehicles.
They gave President like 10th grade we did like a field trip in 10th grade go on. They had the main dude that like ran the prison he was one of the inmates but he was like the most respected person there he had set this whole thing where like each person has a theme and a story behind it so it’s not just again in here because of this. He was like my drug was bla bla bla and that led me to violent you know doing all this stuff and they went through all these people and then this like, like 510 You know, good looking dude steps up and he’s just like, yeah, I mind was like a thing of speed. I I really like driving fast. After all these dudes stepped up and we’re like I killed I drove too fast. All the Presidents and mates were like this fucking dude. Like, you get so
