Between Two Fires Book Club Questions
Welcome to the Buddy Book Club – we have a light-hearted comedic podcast that covers a variety of books. Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman likely isn’t showing up on many book club lists, but it should be. It’s a super dark, horror filled, adventure story. It’s weird, it’s funny, it’s like a scary acid trip at times, but entertaining throughout. Tired of the same old predictable book? The same old love stories and plot twists. Between Two Fires is the exact opposite of your typical book. It’s a weird combination of The Last of Us, American Gods, and a Stephen King novel, but set in the dark ages. You need a new genre or change of pace book, this one is sure to be that. If you’re interested, you can check out our podcast on the book.
Our book club questions try to be a little more outside the box/comedic than your typical book club questions – hopefully you enjoy them.
Book Club Questions – Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman
-> What genre would you put this book in?
As I put in the opening It’s a super dark, horror filled, adventure story. It’s weird, it’s funny, and it’s like an scary acid trip at times, but I don’t know what genre it is.
-> What did you think of the setting — Dark Ages of France?
The setting made the book in my mind, even though I have never been to France, I felt like I was there.
-> How long do you think you’re surviving in this world?
If the plague doesn’t kill me first, I’m certainty getting killed by one of the statues that comes to life at night.
-> Are you worried about going to hell after the description of it in the book?
Yikes, talk about horror, that last 15 pages of this book and the description of hell were not a fun experience. I’m saying my Hail Mary’s every night after reading this.
-> Did you find yourself laughing at times during this book or do we just have a sick sense of humor?
The copious amount of swearing, fart jokes, and weird dreamlike sequences definitely added some humor to the book. But I’m a simple man.
-> Were you as angry as I was about the women ‘with a mustache’ that conned them in Paris and made them pay for that gross room? I thought the customer was always right!
Out of pure principle I’m not paying that women who was so rude. I really wished that Thomas found her and killed her.
-> Thomas and Delphine have two very different opinions on violence, where does your opinion lie after this book?
I side with Thomas, there seemed to be countless situations where violence saved their lives, but Delphine was easy to criticize after the fact. Delphine wants a nice steak dinner, but doesn’t want you to injure a cow.
-> Are you feeling less charitable after reading this book and seeing where Thomas’ valor and sacrifices got him? His rewards for self sacrifice included: The plague and a trip to hell.
No good deed goes unpunished huh? Seemed like after every good thing Thomas did something bad would immediately happen or he’d be chastised by Delphine.
-> Of the three main characters who was your favorite?
I really liked all of them, I especially like the comic relief from the drunk priest.
-> Of all the bad guys or ‘bosses’ they face, who do you think was the worst?
The statue that went around killing babies was by far the worst for me.
-> What were your thoughts on the all the religious symbolism and back story with the Holy Spear and angels?
Did this go completely over your head or was that just us?
-> Who would you cast in The Between Two Fires Movie?
