Good Omens – Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett – Episode 25

The Buddies stare down Armageddon in Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s classic, Good Omens. The Buddies are joined by Matt (@mattythekid7) of Tupelo, Mississippi fame and discuss a wide variety of topics including: America bashing/communists, musk (the smell), going to heaven vs hell, drugs and rock & roll, talking to plants/strangers at gas stations, prostitutes/demons with a hearts of gold, ‘good’ haircuts, bathroom zoom calls, and much, much more. Percy Jackson

Percy Jackson: The Lighting Thief – Rick Riordan – Episode 24

The Buddies bolt into book one of the Percy Jackson series, The Lighting Thief, by Rick Riordan. It was the first time reading this young adult adventure novel for the Buddies, and it had them reminiscing about capture the flag, peanut butter and (Heinz) ketchup sandwiches, and the true definition of a satyr. No episode would be complete without a plethora of Harry Potter and Austin Powers references, which this episode provided in spades.

Project Hail Mary

Project Hail Mary – Andy Weir – Episode 23

The Buddies launch themselves into Project Hail Mary, by Andy Weir. Things got off to a Rocky start once they realized the book is a sci-fi thriller in the vain of The Martian and not a reference to the famed Roger Staubach Hail Mary pass. Good Buddy, Magic (@nicoitaliano13) joined the pod (and supplied his best Rocky voice), as the buddies discussed a variety of topics including, Microsoft Excel, Tape Measures, and the best way to die in space.

Red Rising

Red Rising – Pierce Brown – Episode 22

The Buddies read (rising) an all-time favorite,  as the they launch themselves into the gory damn world of Red Rising, by Pierce Brown.  They are joined by good buddy Mikko (@mikko_mcdonald) and discuss this being the first book he’s EVER read cover to cover. Red Rising combines all of the buddies favorite elements of Braveheart and Hunger Games,  which is why it was crowned the #1 book by Dylan, Keith (and Mikko by default), which book can supplant it?

Rock Paper Scissors

Rock Paper Scissors – Alice Feeney – Episode 21

The Buddies kick off 2022 with Alice Feeney’s winter-mystery-thriller Rocks Paper Scissor. The Buddies tackle many of the subjects that lead to failed marriages: anniversary gifts, phone stealing, face-blindness, and what you throw first (or kick) in a game of RPC/Roshambo. They also welcome Steph from @rooreads as the first guest of the program!

Hatchet

Hatchet – Gary Paulsen – Episode 20

The buddies get lost in the pages of the young-adult wilderness survival novel Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. The buddies are talking Heinz Ketchup (possible sponsor?), God’s Wrath (also possible sponsor?) and everything in-between. Sharp Objects

Sharp Objects – Gillian Flynn – Episode 19

The Buddies work through the dark twisted world of Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. The twists and turns of this one had the buddies reconsidering many of their life choices.  They found themselves asking questions that have plagued many of this generation: How much meat should they be consuming? How much laxative is too much laxative? What are the pros and cons of pool table sex? Listen to get to the bottom of these serious questions.

The Gray Man by Mark Greaney – Episode 18

The buddies enter the world of globe trotting assassins’ in Mark Greaney’s, The Gray Man.  The action thriller, which which many (read: one person) described as, “a mix between Jason Bourne and Jackie Chan in Rush Hour” had the buddies hotly debating topics. Namely: why you never want to get between a Kazakh/Cossack and their gun,  why blood type is fake and the many benefits of using meth.  The buddies also give expert casting direction, even though the movie has been filmed and is set to be released on Netflix in 2022.

Song of Achilles

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller – Episode 17

The buddies enter the fictional (some say non-fictional) world of Greek mythology following the story of Patroclus and Achilles. The book inspired the buddies to make some movie connections as it followed closely to the movie Troy and also had obvious parallels to Austin Powers and Varsity Blues. Make a sacrifice to a god, grab a spear, jump on a centaur and join us on the ride.

Red Notice

Red Notice by Bill Browder – Episode 16

The buddies jump into the life of high finance, corruption, and murder in the non-fiction thriller Red Notice by Bill Browder. This episode covers a number of topics ranging from, empathizing with multi-millionaires to teaching autocracy 101. Austin Powers and Harry Potter were not mentioned, quoted, or used as a comparison in this episode, breaking a 15 episode streak. The buddies vow to do better next time.
