Conspiracy Theory: Oases Are Fake
We just finished reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (check the out the podcast) and Oases are a big part of the book. After voyaging through the desert Santiago and the Englishman come upon a massive oasis that is supporting a village. Now this book is full of magical, whimsical elements, so naturally I thought this was just part of the magical world, but not actually real, just like magic carpets, genies, and camels.
Everything I know about oases comes from Disney movies and cartoons. We’ve all seen it, the cartoon character walking through the desert, dying of thirst and sees a huge lake (aka an oasis) in the distance only for it to be a mirage. Well it turns out oases are real, or at least that’s what some would have you believe! Logically though, how does a random body of water in the middle of a desert form? Where does come from and how does it form if there is no rain. I searched the internet to find answers, and only came away with more questions.
Oasis Evidence – Photos & Videos
Alright debunking this should be pretty easy right, we’ll just pull up an image of an oasis, and case dismissed. Well a quick Google search solves that:
Those are quite beautiful, some would say almost too beautiful. Isn’t it a bit odd that, all of these pictures are in the distance or close up but have no people in them? We don’t see one person in any of these images, alright let’s try searching “Oasis people”. We should see hundreds of photos of people by these magnificent miracle bodies of water. I’m sure there are influencers and IG photos of these all over the place:
Well, actually it’s almost impossible to find any photos of people actually standing by an ‘oasis’ we see these amazing photos from above, yet searching Google or YouTube, I don’t actually see any examples of this. If we do the same exact search for any other type of cool looking attraction, waterfalls, dead sea, pyramids, you’ll easily find hundreds of thousands of pictures of people in them.
Curious isn’t it, that such a natural phenomenon is not something that people have decided not to travel to or take pictures of.
Science Behind an Oasis
I don’t claim to have any sort of advanced science degree (freshman year high school biology still is the hardest class I’ve ever taken), but I do have a PHD in Bullshit detecting. Everything I looked up about how Oases are formed, just threw out random jargon, that didn’t mean anything.
An oasis can be formed by an underground aquifer or river that creates enough pressure for water to seep to the surface, forming the oasis. These aquifers and natural springs allow for life to exist in harsh climates like the desert and are often well known to local herders, farmers, and travelers in the region.
Firstly, underground rivers are not even real – according to the USGS:
“Have you ever heard that there are rivers of water flowing underground? Do you think it is true? Actually, it is pretty much a myth. Even though there are some caverns, lava and ice tubes, and horizontal springs that can carry water, the vast majority of underground water occupies the spaces between rocks and subsurface material. Generally, water underground is more like water in a sponge.”
Secondly, look up how an aquifer works (I’ll be honest I thought an aquifer was another name for a water filter), but every example shows a lush surroundings with some sort of body of water nearby creating the aquifer. How is this happening in the desert where there are no body of waters nearby and there is no lush vegetation?
Plus, we all know that when you dig deep enough in the ground all that is there is liquid hot mag-ma that would push to the surface cause every volcano to erupt if manipulated just right.
But Why Would They Lie to Us About Oases?
Is the Band Oasis Even Real?
That is a good question, and one I can no longer say ‘yes’ to. Is it possible that the powers-that-be pushed a band with the name of “Oasis” to fame and notoriety to silence those like me that question the very existence of an oasis? It’s almost too convenient isn’t it! Search for Oasis information these days and you’ll be hard pressed to find anything outside of the band information. Something that is worth questioning. But I leave you with this hidden message in their very own lyrics:
“Take me to the place where you go, where nobody knows (like an oasis because they aren’t real) … But please don’t put your life in the hands of a rock and roll band who’ll throw it all away (Don’t trust us or our name)”. It’s been right in front of our face the whole time.
