Sharp Objects Book Club Questions

Welcome to the Buddy Book Club – we have a light-hearted comedic podcast that covers a variety of books. Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn is a dark psychological thriller with plenty of  twists and turns. Like most great thrillers (or romcoms really), things start to go wrong when Camille Preaker returns back to her hometown. Camille is a journalist investigating the murder of two young girls murdered in her hometown. But coming back home dredges up her and her families troubled past. In order to solver this crime she must first uncover her own families secrets (and maybe lay off the booze).

We did a full breakdown of the book on our Sharp Objects podcast episode, if you’re looking for a little more lighthearted banter after a dark disturbing book. We delved into many topics/questions including: how much meat should we be consuming? How much laxative is too much laxative? What are the pros and cons of pool table sex? Plus, many more so feel free to check it out.

Our book club questions try to be a little more outside the box/comedic than your typical book club questions – hopefully you enjoy them.

Book Club Questions – Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

-> Camille gets tuna salad at a buffet where she admits all the food looks gross. Is this the biggest warning sign that she has terrible judgment (or might even be the killer)?

What’s the worst buffet decision you’ve ever made?

-> Is Allen worse than an actual doormat because at least doormats serve a purpose? How many red flags does a man need to ignore before he loses all credibility?

Would you have noticed the horse tranquilizers in the medicine cabinet?

-> Camille goes to a high school party, does ecstasy with 13-year-olds, and hooks up with an 18-year-old. On a scale of 1-10, how uncomfortable did this make you?

What’s the best way to end your night after a night out? Late night eats, Mario Kart, a good movie, or sleeping with someone 14 years younger than you?

-> Richard grabs Camille’s thigh while telling her that her mom’s a murderer, then later rips off her bathrobe without permission. Is Richard worse at investigating crimes or respecting personal space?

Should he lose his badge or just get sent to HR?

-> Camille claims drinking at her mom’s house “doesn’t count.” Do you have certain locations where alcohol doesn’t count?

For us its holidays, weddings, and vacation. Also, Does warm vodka from a nip in bed cross a line, or is that just efficiency?

-> Adora has horse tranquilizers and industrial-strength laxatives just lying around. At what point should someone have called poison control?

To be fair, I wouldn’t mind getting my hand on those industrial-strength laxatives after I take down a full pizza on football Sundays…

-> Are you for or against pool table sex?

The Buddies argued this – with Dman believing that it’s impractical and likely end up being an expensive mistake.

-> Camille wakes up bruised, concussed, and covered in asphalt after doing drugs with middle schoolers and attending a high school party as a 32-year-old. Is this the worst possible Sunday Scaries? Have you experienced anything that came close to this?

We really hope not, it does put some tough Sundays in perspective.

-> Gillian Flynn reveals Amma as the killer in the final pages via a dollhouse made with victims’ teeth. Did this twist work for you

How much would that dollhouse sell for on eBay? I’m mean a dollhouse made with ivory (is that what teeth are made of?)

-> Curry encourages Camille to take a book deal about her family immediately after her mom and sister get arrested for multiple murders. Is this good career advice or the worst timing ever?

How long is an appropriate grieving period before monetizing family tragedy?
