Six of Crows Book Club Questions
Welcome to the Buddy Book Club – we have a light-hearted comedic podcast that covers a variety of books. We just did an episode on Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, one of our favorites (not-so-young) young adult books. We love the gritty cast, adventure, world building, heist, magic and everything else this book had to offer. Even though it was a longer book (16-hour audiobook), it seemed to fly by and is certainly one we’d suggest to readers (it currently sits #4 on Keith’s list). You can check out our Book Club podcast on it if interested.
Our book club questions try to be a little more outside the box/comedic than your typical book club questions – hopefully you enjoy them.
Book Club Questions – Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
-> Were you surprised at how dark the book was for a book considered YA?
Kaz is gouging peoples eyes out, we have shootouts, torture, and some casual discussions about genocide, Six of Crows was much darker than anticipated.
-> Who was your favorite character?
Lot to choose from here and we really did like all of them, but Jesper spoke to us most. Him and his sarcastic, happy-go-lucking, always down to fight attitude, and of course his proclivity for gambling made him relatable.
-> What were your thoughts on Kaz using his brother as a kickboard?
In order to survive Kaz uses his brother dead body to paddle out of the bay. Super dark, but maybe one of the best origin stories and really gave you an idea of why Kaz is so ruthless.
-> Did you think these characters we’re too young (all 16-18 years old) for their actions?
We had a big debate about this on the podcast and even had a Instagram clip about this. No right answer but definitely something that can be debated.
-> Would you have fallen for the con played on Kaz’s brother?
I would 100% fallen for that, and been even more distraught then he was. We also have a blog about the best cons, Six of Crows made the list of best books about conning – any books or movies that we missed?
-> Do you have any empathy for Matthias?
I feel like his character arch is somewhat similar to Edward Norton’s in American History X (but less extreme).
-> Would you give up the ability to read or read well (like Wylan) if you were able to be a master in some artform?
This one is pretty easy for me, I listen to mostly just audiobooks (and am not a great reader), so essentially, I just stay the same and become great at some artform? Yeah sign me up.
-> Would you rather make the trek up the heated shaft that Inej makes or the tunnel crawl that Andy Dufresne makes in Shawshank Redemption?
I initially thought I’d choose the Andy Dufrense tunnel crawl but after seeing how tight that pipe is, I’m having second thoughts, and I can’t imagine the smell.
-> How awesome is the “No Mourners, No Funerals” rallying cry? What other memorable rallying cries can you think of?
For me the “Clear Eyes, Full Heart, Can’t Lose” from the Friday Night Lights show is another one that stands out.
-> What was your favorite scene in the book?
For us it was the initial dock fight and the Matthias prison break.
-> If they were to make a movie about Six of Crows who would you cast?
Yes, these characters appear in the Netflix show Shadow and Bone, but I think to do them justice we’d need a separate movie or show. Here is our ‘older’ actor casting of the movie.
