The Best Brand Names Have Two-Syllables
This likely is a pretty well known concept at this point, but back when I was in college (which may or mayn’t have been 10+ years ago), I wanted to start my own business. Here was the premise: a beer store specifically for college kids. Little background, I was the social chair of a frat… an academic frat (which is what I told my parents) in which most of our time we spent drinking. Anyway, we would spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars every weekend, getting beer, solo cups, ping pong balls, mixers, jello (K-Y and other), etc. It was always a pain in the ass, my goal was basically to create a beer store that had all of this stuff and catered towards frats and college kids. Low overhead, college friendly, convenient. Brilliant idea right?
Anyway I tried to figure out what I would name the store. This is how I came about my Two-Syllables theory. I realized that most of the most prominent and memorable brands all had two-syllables. It’s also common that longtail brands would also rebrand to two-syllables. Many of these brands weren’t even around when I came up with this:
Digital/Electronic Retail/Food Name Rebrand
Google Walmart Instagram to IG
Twitter Costco Dunkin Donuts to Dunkin
Facebook/Meta Walgreens Burger King to BK
TikTok Target Federal Express to FedEx
SnapChat Nike American Express to Amex
Apple Starbucks Restoration Hardware to RH
Netflix Wendy’s Weight Watchers to WW
Tesla Subway Hewlett Packard to HP
Sony Chili’s Walt Disney Company to Disney
Uber/Lyft Costco Buddy Book Club to BBC
The biggest outliers in this theory are Amazon, Coca-Cola, Microsoft (although ‘Windows’ is probably more prominent), McDonalds, and a bunch of others but let’s just pretend those don’t exists. For the record I would have used the name “Seven’s”, that’s just a great name and number. Also CoVo™ fits the bill here.
So this is all to say, the reason we named our podcast Buddy Book Club is because it has… oh Jesus Christ. Well, we’re idiots and decided to make it 4 syllables. When we do a rebrand (read: say something super offensive and have to change our name) here are some new names we can go with:
Booksters
BookBuds
FunClub
FunBoys
BookBoys
ProudBoys
Now that these are listed out they are all trademarked, pretty sure that’s how that works. So no stealing them from us. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
