The Giver Book Club Questions
Welcome to the Buddy Book Club – we have a light-hearted comedic podcast that covers a variety of books. We just finished the literary classic, The Giver by Lois Lowry. This was one of our favorites from middle school and really enjoyed the re-read. You can catch the podcast here, if you’re interested.
Our book club questions try to be a little more outside the box/comedic than your typical book club questions – hopefully you enjoy them.
Book Club Questions – The Giver by Lois Lowry
-> Do you think the Giver was good at his job?
He was 0/2 in terms of training new Givers and he escalated memories pretty quickly for both Rosemary and for Jonas. With Jonas he took it easy and showed him a sunburn followed by a compound fracture…
-> If you read this when you were younger, what new thing did you take away from the book this time?
On first reading, we didn’t realize that they weren’t seeing colors.
-> Do you think colors really have that big impact on us? If we all of a sudden were able to see 10 brand new colors would our world change all of a sudden?
I for one believe that we all actually have the same favorite colors, our eyes just project colors differently to us and we associate a word to them… That may not make sense, but I’m going to write a blog explaining myself (which also won’t make sense).
-> If you lived in this society what job would you have been given as an 11-12 year old?
What were you best at as an 11-12 year old? One of the Buddies responded that they would be a Kleenex integrity tester…
-> Do you think it was unfair that the Giver has to suffer for the sins/memories of everyone?
The Giver basically has to live in pain every day and then is hardly used for advice, seems like that wasn’t really well thought out.
-> Asher had a pretty sweet gig – Assistant Director of Recreation, fun loving kid, never feels pain or hurts. Knowing what you know about the society would you stay in it if you were Asher?
I’m 100% taking the blue pill
-> Infanticide ( intentional killing of infants, I just learned this word), is somewhat common practice historically but is immediately considered wrong by Jonas, in a brainwashed society do you think they would be this enlightened this quickly?
“Infanticide continued to be common in most societies after the historical era began, including ancient Greece, ancient Rome, the Phoenicians, ancient China, ancient Japan, Aboriginal Australia, Native Americans, and Native Alaskans.”
-> What are your favorite dystopian books/movies/show?
The Matrix, Equilibrium, Ex Machia, Minority Report and V for Vendetta are some of our favorites.
-> The book wasn’t very Hollywood-up’d at all, no major love stories, action sequences, or really even bad guys, did you like that or dislike that?
With superhero movies dominating things now, it is interesting to read a story that is pretty much the opposite of that in every facet.
-> There was already a movie made (which deviated pretty heavily from the book), but who did you picture as the actors for this book?
Naturally you would have to keep TSwift as Rosemary.
