Jurassic Park Book Club Questions
Welcome to the Buddy Book Club – we have a light-hearted comedic podcast that covers a variety of books. There is really no need to explain or summarize the plot of Jurassic Park. If you haven’t seen or at least heard of the movie franchise by now, then you’ve likely been living under a prehistoric rock next to an amber-fossilized mosquito that bit a dinosaur. But the Jurassic Park book by Michael Crichton is the origin story. It’s filled with a ton of science/research, even more dinosaur scenes and makes the already great movie shine even brighter. For those that love the movie or have an interest in the deeper science or want more of an adult version of Jurassic Park, then we definitely recommend the book. If you’re interested, you can check out our podcast on the book and a few wild theories we have as well.
Our book club questions try to be a little more outside the box/comedic than your typical book club questions – hopefully you enjoy them.
Book Club Questions – Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton
-> We’re not introduced to the island for a number of chapters, did you enjoy the build up or wish things progressed quicker?
We really like the build up, and all the additional background, really built the tension. Now when they actually got to the island, it would have been good for things to expedite a bit.
-> With all the research and science behind this book, did you think that Dinosaurs could actually be cloned by the end? No, just us?
And if you do think that, then its a pretty small leap to believe that chickens are now bread with multiple wings…
-> Is Dr. Grant a saint? His patience, knowledge, sense of responsibility, and willingness to risk his life multiple times for Hammond’s grandkids was pretty admirable.
In the movie he still has all of these traits (well maybe not patience) but he’s does everything begrudgingly, which made him a bit more human.
-> What were your thoughts on Malcolm’s character? He’s obviously a favorite in the movie, but did you like him in the book?
Personally, I wasn’t his biggest fan (ok — I despised him), his actions, arrogance and overall douchiness really rubbed me the wrong way in the book.
-> Speaking of characters that aren’t great, did you think Lex’s character was pretty one dimensional?
Yes, I know she’s only supposed to be 8, but all she does is celebrate at the wrong time, whine, ask for ice cream, and rag on Timmy.
-> Is Timmy just TJ Henderson from Smart Guy?
The only one on the island that can work a computer and he basically knows everything about dinosaurs.
-> Did you know that in the movie the helicopter scene there is an Easter Egg in regards to dinosaurs and seatbelts?
Check out our IG clip or this totally rational blog that is also about seatbelts.
-> Did you understand what Chaos Theory was by the end of this book?
It’s mentioned a lot of times, but I still have a very tenuous grasp of what it actually means, it just sounded like Murphy’s Law to me.
-> Why is Gennaro blamed for everything while John Hammond gets away scot free?
Gennaro is forced to go help count the Raptor eggs with Dr. Grant because he invested in the island, but what about Hammond who actually created the whole island?
-> There were a lot of dinosaur interactions and scenes (most being way more graphic than the PG-13 movie), what was your favorite from this book?
For me it was the lab scene with Dr. Grant versus the raptors and who could outsmart who (plus we he didn’t have to deal with the kids).
-> is Hammond the worst Grandparent ever?
Makes a park for ‘kids’ then doesn’t care at all about his grandkids safety (he’s eating ice cream while they fight for their lives) and blames everything on them (even though Timmy’s computer skills saved all of them).
